Summer’s here, and we’re gearing up for a busy wedding season ahead! Whether it’s a beautiful beach wedding or a stunning destination location, we’re ready to capture all the magic. Check out our must-read guide for destination wedding photography below, filled with tips and inspiration to help you prepare for your big day from your fellow destination wedding photographer!

1. Booking Early

Are you planning a destination wedding? Remember to book your photographer early to secure availability on your big day!

We recommend booking your destination wedding photographer at least a year in advance to have plenty of time to discuss details and must-have shots. Our team takes destination weddings seriously and will capture all the special moments to make your dream destination wedding come true.

Contact us today to check availability and start planning your perfect destination wedding!

2. Seasons & Time of Year

Ensure a perfect wedding day by selecting a venue with mild weather conditions throughout the year. Check the forecast to avoid extreme temperatures or rain that could spoil the day. The months between May and September are perfect for travel and offer the best opportunity for beautiful and unforgettable wedding photos.

3. Vendors

When booking a destination wedding, it’s important to find reliable vendors. Not only will they help turn your destination wedding photos into that Pinterest board you admire, but will also make sure your destination wedding experience is as smooth as possible. Check with local vendors to see if they are available to travel internationally.

4. Tips for Sticking to Your Destination Wedding Budget

Planning ahead and sticking to a budget is crucial when it comes to a destination wedding. Here are some tips:

  • Plan Ahead: make a comprehensive list of expenses and prioritize what is most important to you. This will help you allocate your funds accordingly.
  • Share Expenses with Guests (optional): consider your budget and your guests’ financial situations before deciding whether to split the cost of accommodations and travel tickets.
  • Consider a Smaller Wedding Having: a smaller wedding can allow you to pay more attention to details and décor, resulting in magical wedding photos. Plus, it can mean less money spent on food and drinks.

Remember, prioritize what’s important to you and your partner. With careful planning and budgeting, you can have the destination wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank.

5. Picking the Right Outfit

When it comes to destination wedding photography, picking the right outfit is key. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Inform Your Guests: Let your guests know about the weather and accommodations at your destination so that they can dress accordingly. This will also help you in deciding on your wedding dress.
  • Consider the Environment: When picking your wedding dress, keep in mind the environment of your destination. A light and simple dress will look great against a beach backdrop, while a ball gown may not be as practical.

Remember, the most important thing is to choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident. With the right outfit and setting, your destination wedding photos will be absolutely breathtaking.

We hope you found this guide helpful in planning your dream wedding! To get a better sense of our style and expertise, here are some of our favorite photos from our most recent destination weddings. We’ve captured moments all over the world, from the beautiful landscapes of Italy and France to the breathtaking beaches of St. Lucia. Wedding photography is an art, and we are constantly experimenting with different techniques and trends to capture that perfectly authentic shot.  A wedding photography trend everyone is talking about in 2023 is the use of motion blur.  It’s like adding a dash of magic to your wedding photos. Although We’ve been using motion blur in our photography for over a decade, it’s only in recent years that this trend has exploded in popularity amongst the wedding photography community. Motion blur is a technique that adds a sense of movement to still images. It creates a dramatic and romantic effect.  Almost as though the couple is in a world of their own. It’s perfect for capturing the raw emotions and movement that make weddings so special. Imagine the bride’s veil fluttering in the breeze as she walks towards her partner. Or, the groom’s hand reaching out to hold his partner’s hand in a passionate embrace.  Motion blur captures these moments with an authentic and dramatic effect that truly tells the story of the couple’s love.

Elements to achieve Wedding Photography Motion Blur trend:

As a bride, if you love this style of imagery, you can play a significant role in incorporating motion blur photography into your wedding day.

1. WEAR A FLOWY WEDDING GOWN

One of the key elements that you can incorporate into your wedding to accomplish the trend of motion blur photography is a flowy, long dress. The flowy nature of the dress allows for a sense of movement and motion.  It creates an ideal subject for this photography technique. When you walk down the aisle, your dress will move with you.  As a result, it creates a blur effect in the background while highlighting your beauty and grace. A dress that is too stiff or structured may not achieve the desired effect. So, it is essential to choose a dress that has the right amount of flow and movement.

2. INCORPORATE A SOFT WEDDING VEIL

Another aspect to take into consideration is incorporating a soft wedding veil. A soft veil adds movement and flow to your look that translates beautifully in motion blur. As you move or turn your head, the veil will follow, when photographed this creates motion and results in a dynamic look. A long veil, preferably one that extends past the length of your dress, is ideal as it has more space for the veil to trail and flow.

3. CHOSE THE RIGHT FOOTWEAR

Your footwear choice can also impact the effect of motion blur photography. High heels and pointed shoes may restrict your movement, limiting the flow of your dress. Consider wearing a block heels or any kind of shoes that are comfortable enough for you to walk/run around and to help you move around freely. Shoes with ankle straps can also create movement and add interest to your wedding photos.

4. CHOOSE A GREAT LOCATION

Another element to consider is the location of the your creative. Outdoor locations with lots of space, are ideal for motion blur photography as they provide ample room for you to move and for the background to blur. Indoor locations can also work, but it is important to choose a location with enough space and natural light to achieve the desired effect.

Motion blur photography is a stunning technique that can create a sense of energy and movement in your wedding photos. I think it’s a trend that has been around for a long time and here to stay.  By incorporating a flowy, long dress, a soft wedding veil, comfortable shoes and and location, you can achieve this effect and create stunning, timeless photographs.

Photographing a wedding is no joke.  We spend countless hours in workshops and training on shoots perfecting our craft.   Shooting a wedding is really like no other type of photoshoot.  You have to wear many hats,  be really quick and AMAZINGLY creative under pressure and under some crazy deadlines.  At Mango Studios we offer workshops on an ongoing basis to our photographers to make sure everyone is staying motivated and inspired.  We share our knowledge and experience and become better together.  On the wedding day we have to be great at many roles.  Not only do we occasionally have to play the role of councillor, wedding planner, or boutonniere specialist  (heheh)  but we also have to be an expert in many photography genres.  Below are list of roles we play during that 8-10 hour jam packed day.

1. Be Calm, Organized and Great under pressure

Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice.  Can’t say this enough.  A wedding day can be hectic and over whelming at times.  We sometimes have split seconds to be creative and assertive under extraordinary pressure.  You have to capture once in a lifetime moments within seconds technically perfect and creatively amazing.  This comes with time, practice, being organized and preparing ahead of time which will build your confidence.  Reviewing timelines, photo lists, shoot locations, inspirational images,  the weather network,  and speaking with your client will all help you prepare and be more confident in shooting the wedding day.

2.  Be an expert in Product styling and product photography.

We typically have about 20 minutes to shoot, dress, shoes, invites, rings and any other misc items.  It’s not enough to technically be great but we also have to have a vision of how to style and display items to create shots that beautiful not only tell the story of the wedding day. We try to create an arrangement of all the items in one shot (invitations, shoes, jewellery, rings, flowers, perfume, etc). When choosing items to style in your photos, look for items that are similar in colour or are complementary colours. Avoid pairing to many different colours together. We stick with two or three main colours and consider adding accents. We aim to create balance and choose items that are of different sizes or shapes with a neutral background to photograph them on. We will photograph the invitation set with a typically a 50mm lens preferably and a large aperture. We will always get a series of birds eye view and then get closer details at angles that are interesting. Generally a good tip is to look for a small table or chair to photograph small items on individually such as flowers and shoes. For the dress and suit, we find a place to hang the suit jacket and dress preferably in a location with nice natural light and one that is versatile with multiple vantage points for framing.  Finding a window or art piece for example is key, something that relates to the story of the wedding day.  The key is to try to always explain the wedding in one shot. (for example, location, colour scheme, and any personal touches from the couple).  We make sure we always look for the nicest hanger available- or ask the couple to prepare one a head of time.  As for the wedding dress, we photograph the entire dress full length in portrait and landscape and then go in for details of anything interesting. Same with the suit jacket, check for any personalized embroidery and interesting details.

3. A great fashion or Portrait photographer

Key moments for portrait wedding photography are those meaningful moments after the bride finally has her makeup on, once the couple has gotten into their wedding gown and suit, when they can privately pose for pictures with their parents, the first real moments after tying the knot—you get the picture.

4. An amazing photo journalist

A good photographer must have a very keen eye for detail to ensure that all elements within the photo—the lighting, the composition, the subject, and everything else in between—work together harmoniously to convey the right vision or message. Even the tiniest detail can make or break a photograph.  We try to find unusual angles, and focus on light, composition and most important emotion.

5. Interior photographer

A wedding client spends countless hours planning and spends a lot of money trying to make their wedding day unique and special.  Its our responsibility to capture the space and all the details in  beautiful and interesting way.

6. An expert at lifestyle photography

We focus on prompting, not posing and getting those perfect in between moments. Lifestyle photography lies somewhere in between documentary photography on the one hand, and classic portraiture on the other hand. A documentary photographer will have a “fly on the wall” approach, catching life as it is without trying to interfere with what is going on. He or she will tell the story of real life, as it happens, while trying to be as transparent as possible for his/her subjects. A photographer specialized in classic portraiture will try to have full control over what is in the frame: light, backgrounds, clothes, poses, props. He or she will be in charge of how their subjects position their bodies, move (or not) and will control everything up to the angle of their head or how their hand is laying on their lap.  Our approach is organic and seamless. We strive to capture the organic moments and the raw, genuine emotions of your wedding day. We also appreciate all of the in-between moments that otherwise go unnoticed – the moments you forget all of the noise, the moments that are not forced or posed.

Creativity. It seems like it comes out of nowhere. Something you’ve seen a thousand times can suddenly look anew. All it takes is a fresh perspective. Here at Mango, it’s super important to keep a feeling of inspiration and excitement when it comes to our work. One way we do this is by shooting creative sessions. We team up with some of the incredible vendors and venues in the wedding industry and produce awe-inspiring photos. It’s a great way to express ourselves and use our imagination. We leave the shoot feeling recharged, inspired and ready to rock our next wedding completely. Last August, Rainbow Chan came up with a plan for a creative editorial at the Estates of Sunnybrook to submit to the Wedluxe magazine. We knew this Estate of Sunnybrook wedding inspiration was going to be the bee’s knees – but when we heard it was going to be an Art Nouveau inspired shoot, we were all in!

Art Nouveau is a design movement from the turn of the 19th century and is a response to the academic art that was taking place during that time, as well as the industrial revolution. The style is indicative of flowing, organic forms and natural imagery such as plants and flowers. Architecture in this style is often curved with lots of continuous lines.

For this editorial, Rainbow sent us her mood board, and we could feel her vision! Inspired by old European films and fine art, the Estates of Sunnybrook fit the bill for her art nouveau dream. It has beautifully arched window sills, and a total old charm feels –  I could envision perfect backdrops for our shoot.

Rainbow created a ceremony scene starting with an incredible floral archway designed by Fuscia Designs. Add in an ornamental white gate supplied by GPS Décors and our art nouveau shoot was coming to life! I stood back to get a full perspective of the shot: our model was at the front, having a quiet moment, surrounded by gorgeous purple florals and the enormous green trees behind. It was stunning! I moved a little closer, playing with different angles, using the gate to create visual interest with the repetition of lines. We could all feel this Estate of Sunnybrook wedding inspiration was going to be something special!

Inside, table settings from Simply Beautiful Décor added to the art nouveau vibe; lots of organic lines and natural whimsy. There were SO many stunning pieces to photograph. The natural lighting of this room makes shooting in this space a MUST whenever I am lucky enough to shoot a wedding at the Estates of Sunnybrook. The airy light filtering in through the arched windows created such a soft, delicate feeling to our set-up.

My favourite part of our Art Nouveau shoot was the scene outside by the stone wall. This location had a feeling of old world charm, and it felt like we were transported to Europe! I have shot at the Estates of Sunnybrook quite a few times, but I had never photographed at this particular spot. It is incredible when space you are super comfortable with can feel entirely novel with a little bit of imagination and ignition of a creative spark! I wanted to keep the vibe playful and natural – I had the model laughing to create a mood that was full of ease and light. We used the same backdrop to photograph the cake: the curved archway of the window was a perfect art nouveau backdrop.

I am so proud of our Estates of Sunnybrook wedding inspiration session! I had such an amazing experience working with all the incredible vendors during this session and can’t wait to create something super special again in the future. Thank you so much!

Destination wedding photography

With the summer finally in town, I’m preparing for the busy season ahead with a must-read destination wedding photographer guide to shooting weddings. As much as I love shooting in Canada and the USA, this year is also filled with tons of beautiful destination weddings. I couldn’t be happier – escaping to a sandy beach makes for a beautiful wedding, as well as gorgeous wedding photos! As I’m packing for my next destination wedding (and anxiously trying to fit all my clothes in a carry-on suitcase), I decided to share my personal destination wedding photography guide to help you prepare and get inspired:

1. Booking Early

Booking your photographer early is crucial! When it comes to destination wedding photography, you want to make sure your photographer is available for your travel dates and is able to travel to your destination! Usually, I book my destination weddings a year in advance – it gives me and my clients plenty of time to discuss all the wedding details and must have wedding shots. You can simply shoot an email here to see my availability.

2. Seasons & Time of Year

When booking a wedding venue, make sure to double-check what the weather is like throughout the year. Most people wouldn’t want to get married in the rain or when it’s scorching hot! Usually the best times of year to travel are May through September. Making sure your weather is mild will not only make your wedding enjoyable, but it will also allow for absolutely beautiful wedding photos.

3. Vendors

When booking a destination wedding, it’s important to find reliable vendors. Not only will they help turn your destination wedding photos into that Pinterest board you admire, but will also make sure your destination wedding experience is as smooth as possible. Check with local vendors to see if they are available to travel internationally! The Friends List here will help you see some of the vendors I have worked with.

4. Budget

Every couple has a different wedding budget they get to work with. Planning ahead can be a great help for this. While some couples split the cost of accommodations and travel tickets with their guests, there is no hard rule to follow. Remember, if you’re having a smaller wedding, you can pay more attention to details and décor, which means tons of magical wedding photos!

5. Picking Your Outfit Accordingly

It’s important to remember to let your guests know what the weather and accommodations will be like at your destination. This will allow them (and me!) to properly prepare for your wedding and wear the proper attire. Most importantly, it will help guide you when deciding on your wedding dress. While ball gowns look amazing in photographs, something light and simple will also look great in wedding photos against the dreamy beach backdrop.

I hope you found this destination wedding photography guide helpful! Below are some of my favourite photos from Teresa and Louis’ destination wedding at SALA Phuket Resort in Thailand. I hope you enjoy!

From the Bride… Our first date was on the beach. Louis proposed to me at the beach too, so we decided on a beachside wedding. We wanted the photos to capture more about the beach settings. We wanted a white and pure wedding with a hint of playfulness. We wanted a day that was elegant and graceful, but at the same time more fun, warm and genuine.

Mango Studios - Outdoor Engagement Photos

So many of our couples ask me if they should have a theme for their outdoor engagement photos. I always tell them that it’s such a special set of photos before the wedding. Tying in a theme can make it a really memorable set of images. In general, I like to think of them as a practice session for your creative portraits together on the wedding day. They help to make you comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. They also give you a good excuse to indulge in dressing up and having some fun together! That’s why I love this Old Hollywood Inspired Engagement Session with Alicia and Phil. It ties in all my favourite parts of an engagement session – a great story, a beautiful theme, and amazing clothes. To help the rest of my couples make the most out of their outdoor engagement photos, I’ve come up with three tips to keep in mind when you’re planning.

1. Tell me YOUR story

Are you ready for some backstory on this amazing couple and their Old Hollywood inspired engagement session? Alicia and Phil have known each other for 8 years. They were introduced to one another by a friend who had hoped they’d all just become good friends. Little did they know their friendship would blossom year after year. After many many deep conversations together about friendships, spirituality, careers and life, they soon realized that they had fallen in love! We’re so happy they did! Knowing these details helped up get to know them quicker and made the whole experience really comfortable.

2. Incorporate your wedding theme

It’s easy to see how in-love this couple is from their Old Hollywood inspired outdoor engagement photos below. The love the classic Hollywood look and chose that for their wedding day. Naturally it was a good tie in to carry through the engagement session. When they have both sets of images in their wedding album, everything will flow super nicely.

The idea behind their choice in location stemmed from wanting a spot that was a little out of the ordinary.  Alicia and Phil both agreed that the perfect spot needed to hold some meaning for them. As a sentimental couple, they thought it best to say something about their relationship. Looking back years from now, they imagined reflecting on how far they’ve come together. A few days later, they were driving through their hometown of Caledon, they came upon these railroad tracks. The tracks would symbolize their new journey and the possibilities it brings with them. They finished off the vision with a sleek, black GTO.

3. Dress to Impress

The clothes you wear on your engagement session are so key. I always encourage couple’s to dress up. There’s nothing worse than regretting not putting your best foot forward when you’re having professional photos taken. Alicia and Phil’s clothing added an urban twist that will carry through on the wedding day. Accessories wise, I love Alicia’s white floral headpiece and Phil’s sharp fedora. The elegance and personal touches make these photos truly stunning.

A word from Alicia, the Bride, about her Old Hollywood Inspired Engagement Session:

“When it came to decide who would photograph this memory, there was no doubt in our mind that we would ask Mango Studios. Because I am an event planner, I have been following their work for some time now, and have always appreciated their natural efforts in capturing memories. On the day of the shoot, they were nothing short of what we expected. Our photographer, Tyler, had an amazing personality, and as we pre-warned him we were camera shy, he knew exactly what jokes to make to take us out of our comfort zone.”

I can’t wait for more Old Hollywood inspired fun with Alicia and Phil. Next up: their wedding at Toronto’s The Factory Lounge! xo

When you think of the desert, images of tumbleweeds and Hollywood western movies might first come to mind; Clint Eastwood in cowboy boots and a hat tilted over his furrowed brow riding off into the sunset. Some might not picture this as their ideal location for dreamy engagement photos. But for this California Desert Engagement Session, Jennifer and David did exactly that. The vast desert landscape filled with cacti, dry grass, and boulders really set the tone for this super cool shoot in Palm Springs!

What do you need to consider when choosing a location for your engagement photos? You might want to think about what the location is going to say. You can say something about your relationship and what you like to do together or maybe pick a location that means something to you. In doing this, you’ll be sure to create images that are meaningful, timeless, and memorable. We promise you’ll look back on them as the years pass and be able to remember exactly how you looked and felt.

For Jennifer and David, they went with a desert engagement session because it held significant meaning. David grew up going to Palm Springs on vacation with his family. He remembered the beauty of the desert and just how fun and amazing it would be to shoot there. He knew the mountains, the desert landscape, and the stunning sunsets. So, with this in mind, he gave us the project of scoping out the perfect desert location for photos.

We set out to find different locations that would showcase the beauty of the desert, and give way to windswept and dream-like photos. Whether it was the base of a mountain, straight or winding dirt roads, or a friendly Californians front yard, this couple was game. Jennifer and David were so in love with the locations we brought them to.

Jennifer wore an open back, long sheath lace dress with a train that perfectly hugged her body. This dress against the sandy paths gives the impression of a soft desert goddess. She wanted her hair down so it would blow in the wind, further adding to the stunning windswept look of the shoot. David complimented her and wore a simple striped shirt and trousers. As they walked through the desert hand-in-hand, they couldn’t help but dance and have fun. We love how she later wore this dress during her wedding reception to tie the events together.

Jennifer’s second dress, if possible, was even cooler than the first! We love the way the soft mint green, lace and chiffon dress with metallic gold belt popped out of the background especially against the hot pink desert cactus flowers we found in the garden of a very friendly Californian’s backyard. (This couple was so obviously in love, complete strangers offered their property for the shoot!)

Their choice of a desert engagement session was so sweet for this couple. Together we accomplished a glamorous and whimsical engagement shoot that sums up their relationship. It was a way of tying together their lives; taking from his youth and bringing it together into their present and future. They’ll be able to bring more memories with them to Palm Springs as they embrace their marriage and grow their family together.

We can’t wait to share more from their gorgeous wedding at The Parker Hotel soon!

Some of our favourite events we’ve had the pleasure of photographing in Toronto have been outdoor weddings. Seeing the transformation unfold is something truly special. Our couple, Sara and Daniel, did just that. Their ceremony and reception took place at Toronto’s Evergreen Brickworks; a venue that holds the potential to be transformed into someplace so romantic. Their wedding took from the natural beauty of its surroundings and added a bit of whimsy to bring  the magic of a garden theme to life.

Sara and Daniel wanted their outdoor wedding to be as magical and whimsical as the day they were engaged (over-the-top type magic, picnicking under the Eiffel tower in Paris!) The feeling of fun and excitement is what they wanted to share with their guests at their wedding and they hired the team at Melissa Andre Events to help bring their vision to life.

Evergreen Brick Works; once a brick factory, was reformed into a tranquil city park with reflecting ponds and lush gardens for visitors to escape into. The old buildings have been restored and opened as an environmentally focused community and culture center. The moment Sara and Daniel toured the grounds, they knew that it was meant to be!

Sara and Daniel said their “I Dos” in the gardens overlooking a lily pad-filled pond in the park surrounding Brickworks. Their altar was marked by floating floral “air balloons” with lilac, soft pink and white flowers draped as the “balloon”. The simplicity of their altar allowed for their guests to look out at the park’s scenic views.

Their decor was like a forest fairy’s dream, complete with twinkling lights overhead like stars in a night sky. It absolutely looked like a lush enchanted garden. When you entered the reception room your eyes met towering, leafy tabletop trees and foliage chandeliers as alternating centerpieces making you feel like a bird flying through the trees. The natural textures and accents Sara and Daniel chose paired perfectly with the venue’s more rustic feel. Soft pink and white mixed bouquets in gold vases sat on the table tops giving off the sweet scent of a blooming floral garden. The mood was set by the combination of twinkling overhead lights and flickering candles on the tables among the greenery.

The tiny details of this wedding are what make it even more special and magical. Each guest was able to take home pieces of this magical, outdoor garden wedding and create their own little garden at home! They received a mini potted succulent with their escort card. When they arrived at their seat, waiting for them was a gold rimmed glass terrarium box filled with metallic pebbles, plants and blooms. Also at their place setting was an engraved cutting board with the couple’s initials in a heart. One of the most unique takeaways this couple gave to their guests was their menu cards. At each place setting was a menu card, but it wasn’t your ordinary piece of paper. The menu was printed on wildflower seed paper, which for those with a green thumb, could be taken home and planted to make a lovely garden in the coming years. This garden theme not only lasted the night, but with these thoughtful favours their wedding garden will bloom for years to come.

Congratulations Sara and Daniel! xo
